Joseph Stubbersfield’s research draws on the fields of cultural evolution, cognitive psychology, social learning, evolutionary psychology and cognitive anthropology. Using these approaches to examine how cognitive biases influence both the content and cultural transmission of information, focusing on narratives, particularly urban legends, conspiracy theories and medical misinformation.


    Joseph studied Psychology at Manchester University, before completing a Master's degree in Evolutionary Psychology at Liverpool University. His PhD was completed at Durham University, with a thesis on the cultural evolution and transmission of urban legends. Since then he has worked as a postdoctoral researcher on projects in the School of Biology at St Andrews University and the Anthropology Department of Durham University, before joining Psychology at Heriot-Watt University in August 2019.
